ACTIVITIES ON THE FARM
HIKING TRAILS
You may take well-marked leisurely strolls around the farm from 10 minutes to 1 ½ hours or more energetic hikes around the surrounding hillsides overlooking the Drakensberg, which may take a few hours. Quiet solitude and huge vistas will greet you as you explore our wonderful valley. Shady and quite river walks are a birders paradise as is the open grasslands of some of the longer walks. Rare Oribi (Endangered Species) or the graceful Rietbuck can be seen if you are quiet and lucky.
MOUNTAIN BIKING.
Both Shaun and Jane ride Mountain bikes ,so we have routes to suite all caliber of rider. From gentle rides along farm roads,2km 5 km, 10km,25km, 45km, and beyond into very technical and challenging single-track goat paths and River crossings. We have secured traverse rights across neighboring farms which makes a lot of these rides Exclusive to Rietvlei Country House Guests
BIRDING:
This is a paradise for the amateur and enthusiast alike .Shaun is a glider pilot who takes a ken interest in raptors , as he shares the sky soaring with these majestic birds. Wetlands National heritage site 4km from the farm offers some wetland species
FISHING.
Both trout and Bass fishing is available in dams on the farm, One bass dam is only fifty meters from Rietvlei Country House so Children fishing late can easily be called in for Dinner. (Adults Too)
SWIMMING.
All adventure seekers need to try and swim in a dam. This adds some excitement to people who are used to swimming in a pool .For added fun there are a couple of old windsurfers to paddle about on use as floating beds or to try and fish off. Children can even try and make a raft with plastic drums and Bamboo. With all this exciting adventure swimming we do not have a formal pool. Swimming is confined to the summer months only as the water is dangerously cold in winter. A short 2-hour drive for international tourists will see you playing in the warm Indian Ocean all year round.
ADVENTURE.
Search for fossils, Dinosaurs lived here some time ago and fossilized forests and trees abound , a short walk will see you at Fossil hole or an organized Expedition with a guide will show more of fossils on neighboring farms.
RELAXATION
You may relax on the spacious front verandah of the homestead overlooking the rolling hills of the Lowlands Valley Wildlife reserve. In winter relax in the lounge in front of a log fire. Or you may find a secluded spot in the huge garden or go out into the veld and find a quite spot under a tree or sitting on a rock to re-find your soul. If you have not brought a book, choose one from the small library in the house.
